Industrial heat glossary.
24 terms explained.
Short explanations for owners, process specialists and operators. Follow each term to practical guidance on its topic.
- Thermal output
The rate of heat transfer. Selection compares output under defined operating conditions, as well as model names.
Related topic ↗- Kilowatt and megawatt
Units of power. 1 MW = 1,000 kW. Power describes the rate of energy transfer.
Related topic ↗- Kilowatt-hour
A unit of energy. A constant 100 kW for 2 hours transfers 200 kWh. This is an illustrative calculation, not a HELIX performance claim.
Related topic ↗- Airflow
Air volume or mass per unit time. A value in m³/h needs its measurement conditions, including temperature.
Related topic ↗- Air-system resistance
The pressure drop a fan must overcome through ducts and equipment. Airflow is evaluated together with operating pressure.
Related topic ↗- Heat exchanger
A device transferring heat between media. In indirect air heating, heat passes through a wall separating the streams.
Related topic ↗- Indirect heating
Heating through a heat-transfer surface. Air quality also depends on equipment condition, tightness and system design.
Related topic ↗- Grain moisture content
Water content of a sample. On a wet basis, water mass is divided by total sample mass. Results require representative sampling and an agreed method.
Related topic ↗- Percentage point
The difference between percentage values. A change from 20% to 15% moisture is 5 percentage points.
Related topic ↗- Tonne-percentage-point
An accounting measure: grain mass multiplied by moisture percentage points removed. It is not the mass of removed water. Comparisons need an agreed mass basis.
Related topic ↗- Dryer throughput
Grain mass processed per unit time under specified conditions. Crop, inlet and final moisture and the time boundary matter when comparing values.
Related topic ↗- Relative humidity
Describes how close air is to saturation with water vapour at its temperature. It is evaluated alongside temperature in drying and ventilation.
Related topic ↗- Fuel moisture content
Water content in fuel. Dry-basis and as-received values use different denominators and cannot be compared directly without a stated basis.
Related topic ↗- Bulk density
Mass of loose fuel per bulk volume, including spaces between particles. It informs storage, transport and feeding estimates.
Related topic ↗- Fuel particle size
The distribution of particle sizes. Feeding systems need the range and information on long pieces, fines and contaminants.
Related topic ↗- Ash content
The proportion of residue after a defined test. State the test method and mass basis; ash behaviour is assessed separately.
Related topic ↗- PLC
A programmable logic controller. Executes configured control logic using input signals; capabilities depend on the model and project.
Related topic ↗- HMI
A human-machine interface for status and permitted parameter entry. A displayed button alone does not establish that a command is safe.
Related topic ↗- Variable-frequency drive
An electronic drive controlling a motor within an agreed range. Limits depend on the motor, machine and drive documentation.
Related topic ↗- Modbus
A data communication protocol. Communication alone does not establish signal freshness or replace independent protective functions.
Related topic ↗- Recipe
An agreed set of process parameters, with a defined version, change permissions and power-restoration behaviour.
Related topic ↗- Commissioning
Agreed on-site checks and adjustments. Acceptance criteria and permitted operating conditions are recorded in project documentation and protocols.
Related topic ↗- Total cost of ownership
Combined costs over an agreed period: purchase, integration, operation and maintenance. Comparisons need the same calculation boundaries.
Related topic ↗- Project brief
A description of requirements, initial data, work boundaries and acceptance criteria. Turns a broad request into a reviewable proposal.
